About 50 people attended Old Timers Day, hosted by the Grant Friends of the Library. They talked and told stories while lively music was played by William Whiddon on the dulcimer, Larry Lankford on the guitar, and Julius Smith on the fiddle. There was singing, snacking on Susie Smith's very special tea cakes, researching into family histories, and in the computer area football fans gathered around a portable TV set to watch Alabama play ball. Old and young alike enjoyed each others' company at this very special community gathering. The Friends of the Library plan to host similar gatherings in the future.
Raymona Bevel was the chairperson who planned and decorated for the event.

The Friends of the Library had a booth at the Grant Founder's Day celebration in Grant Park on Saturday, August 25. In addition to selling used books ($0.25 for paperbacks, and $0.50 for hardbacks), the Friends sold chances to win a 14" TV-VCR combined unit for $1.00 each. At 5pm, the winner of the TV-VCR was drawn, and Anita Hopper of New Hope won.
The Friends also had a jar of beans, and for $0.25 anyone could take a guess at how many beans were in the jar. At 5pm, the closest guess had been made by Jordan Smith. Jordan won $5.00 for his winning guess of 1,898 beans. The actual number of beans was 3,904. And yes, Sylvia Williams, the current President of the Friends of the Library actually counted every single bean.
We also let people know about the book on the History of Grant and the Surrounding Areas that we are compiling, and encouraged tham to contribute their stories.

On Thursday, July 26, 2001, we were priviledged to have Dr. Pete Sparks speak to us on the War Between the States. He gave us fascinating information on the participation of local people in the War, and some background on the War as it effected Grant, Marshall County, North Alabama, and Alabama as a whole.
Dr. Sparks dressed in an authentic uniform and told about the various parts of his clothing and equipment.
Everyone greatly enjoyed his presentation, and we all learned from it.

The Friends of the Library has initiated a project to compile a history of Gunter Mountain. The proceedings will go to the Grant Library. The price of the book and approximate date of publication will be announced at a later time.
The goal of the project is not only to record family members' birth and death dates, but actually put people back in time with stories, pictures and humor. We need to hear about the good times, hard times, funny pranks, etc. If we don't write our history down, it will be lost to the generations to come. We can't do this without help from the families of Grant and Gunter Mountain. There are some family histories on display in the Library to give you some ideas.
If you have articles, pictures, or any information to contribute concerning the history of Gunter Mountain, you can mail them to the Grant Library (P.O. Box 401, Grant, AL 35747). Please do not send us your one and only original of great-grandma; send a copy, as we cannot be responsible for lost photos. You can also contact Jean Jackson 728-4904, Annette Kirkland 728-4286, or Rex Province 728-4607. You can also leave information and your phone number at the library, and someone from the Friends will get back in touch with you.
We'd like to collect as much information as possible by January 31, 2002.
